After years in which hustle culture treated rest as optional, sleep has emerged as the wellness priority Americans are taking most seriously. The reframing casts good sleep not as indulgence but as the foundation of health.

The evidence is compelling and increasingly well known. Consistent, sufficient sleep supports nearly every dimension of wellbeing, from mood and cognition to metabolism and immune function. Chronic shortfalls carry real costs.

Hygiene over hacks

The practical wisdom, often called sleep hygiene, is refreshingly low-tech: consistent schedules, a cool and dark room, limiting screens before bed, and moderating caffeine and alcohol. These basics outperform most gadgets and supplements.

That has not stopped a booming market in sleep products, from trackers to teas. Experts view them with measured skepticism, noting that awareness can help but that the fundamentals do the heavy lifting. Obsessing over sleep data can even backfire.

A cultural shift

Perhaps the biggest change is permission. Where sleeping enough once carried a whiff of laziness, it is now widely understood as a form of self-respect and a performance advantage. Prioritizing rest, the new consensus holds, is one of the smartest things a person can do.
